Inspired by dimensional lettering found in storefront signage, the Tilt family of typefaces are built to rotate horizontally and vertically.
Not far from the bright lights of Times Square, the Tilt Neon typeface takes its inspiration from the ordinary neon signs that are so ubiquitous in New York City — the ones you would expect to see in the window of a laundromat, locksmith, dive bar, or a dollar slice shop. The Tilt family of type is designed to rotate, placing the focus on the distorted side-angle view of the sign.

Simulating the wireframe outline of letters cast in bronze or vacuum-formed in plastic, the basis for this style is easy enough to find anywhere from a bank entrance to an old theater marquee.
Sign-painters for generations have added a dimensional flair to their lettering by painting a simulated three-dimensional “prismatic” style on an otherwise flat storefront. This style is interpreted in Tilt Prism as a wireframe, so that the viewer might also be convinced that the letters are cut into a surface, rather than being cast separately and adhered to the face of a sign.

All three styles in the Tilt family follow the same model of a sign-painter’s geometric sans-serif, similar to the typefaces Futura or Avant Garde, but with the kinds of details you might expect to see when a letter is built up with a brush. A sign-writer can block out this style of lettering in “one-shot” — when using a flat-edged brush the otherwise pointed apexes on the letters A M N V W end up flush with the cap-height and baseline.
As hand painting becomes less common, it's often replaced by cheap vinyl lettering, stuck to glass only to peel off long before a higher quality sign would disappear. Tilt Warp turns this modern reproduction technique into a three-dimensional form. Designed to rotate 45° in each direction, just like its two other companion styles, the flat letters show their depth as they peel off of the surface.
